“No. 11 Old Dominion 51, No. 6 Notre Dame 50 (South Region) The first game to go final in this year’s tournament is the first upset. Down by three in the closing seconds, Notre Dame’s Carleton Scott had a 3-point attempt to tie the game, but the shot went in and out. Frank Hassell led the Monarchs with 15 points. Ncaa Basketball Rankings Sports 2010:Syracuse sits atop the NCAA Basketball rankings as of Monday morning after a wild weekend that included losses by both Kansas and Kentucky and a rout by the Orange over fellow ranked foe Villanova.
Kansas and Kentucky have long been atop the list, but Syracuse has lurked just below, and snatched the opportunity to slide up by pounding the Wildcats, ranked in the Top 10 themselves for much of the season.
Kansas dropped only to the No. 2 spot, while Kentucky checks in at No. 3
Duke and upstart Kansas State round out the top five, followed by Ohio State, Purdue, New Mexico, Villanova and West Virginia.
For much of the season the polls have been quiet, dominated by the aforementioned powers. But the shakeup , which occured on March 1, officially kicking off March Madness, foreshadows an entertaining final month.
Kansas and Kentucky are clearly losing their air of invincibility, while teams like Kansas State and New Mexico - foreigners to the Top 10 this late in the season for the most part - continue to climb the ranks.
Purdue, meanwhile, suffered a crippling blow with the announcement that star Robby Hummel will miss the remainder of the season with a serious knee injury. Indeed, things look dramatically different than they did less than a week ago.
As they should. Every year someone bursts from the gate as Kansas and Kentucky did this winter, and every year there's silly chatter about undefeated seasons and wire-to-wire runs at the top. It takes a topsy-turvy week like this one to bring everyone off the hyperbole mountain and return things to normal.
